NEFCO continues to cooperate with donors within the framework of the Ukraine Green Recovery Program, among the projects is the construction of a school with near-zero energy consumption, NEFCO Investment Advisor Yulia Shevchuk said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

“We plan to continue cooperation with donors, in particular with the countries of Northern Europe and the European Union. The key areas of our activity remain energy efficiency, social infrastructure, housing renovation for IDPs, water supply and drainage, heat supply, and waste management,” she said.

Among the projects is the construction of a school with near-zero energy consumption on the site of a building destroyed by the war, for which a grant from Finland is planned.

“This school will be different from standard educational institutions. As far as we know, school buildings in Ukraine are strictly regulated, which makes it difficult to make changes to their designs. For example, large rooms such as a sports hall, an assembly hall and a dining room are mandatory.

However, for a building with close to zero energy consumption, it is important to provide for multifunctional use of space, otherwise heating costs will be too high, and the required energy efficiency indicators will not be achieved, the expert explains.

“That is why we are building multifunctional spaces. For example, the assembly hall can have movable walls, like in hotel conference rooms, which will allow it to be used for various educational purposes. Such a solution will help significantly reduce energy consumption,” Shevchuk said.

According to her, this school will be built according to the “design-build” concept, there is already a consultant who is preparing tender documentation.

She also mentioned waste management as a promising area.

“We will start with small projects, such as collecting, sorting and recycling garbage. In addition, we plan to continue the project to supply equipment for dismantling destroyed buildings and managing rubble waste. Probably, in 2025 we will launch this project in one or two cities, possibly in Kyiv region,” Shevchuk said.
